We're Still Here!

Please bear with me! I am covering vacation time for a co-worker and haven't had time to do a real post! I'll try to get to it before Thursday night- depends upon whether or not I can keep my eyes open!

We are all well and happy and hope you are too!

What? No One Is Working???

Okay- twice now I've been to the house and no one has been there working. I'm beginning to wonder if we will be in the first half of August or not! Hello! Have we been forgotten???? The tape and mud is done- here is the kitchen space before the paint and cabinets.
The ceilings are all textured- I wonder how they do that??? The brick is finished on the pillars- and we have a few bricks left over. Strange they didn't brick below the door. I wasn't planning on a step into the house. Guess I get one now!

Hey- Whadda ya know...we have garage doors!

Art Work

I stopped at the house to check out the progress with the drywall. Much to my surprise, there are several cartoon drawings on the walls. Below is a sample.I hope that these cartoons don't end up showing through the paint in the years to come. They just won't match the Disney artwork I've planned for above the cabinets. The artist was even kind enough to leave a website written on the wall. Do you think I should check it out and order more of his drawings to hang in the house?

The Best Snowcones Ever

We have a favorite summer treat at our house...snowcones! The snowcone shack in Garland is the best ever. The ice is shaved and like real snow. The line at the shack is always very long. Today we were lucky! We got there just as it opened and we were the first in line!

Ryan jumps right up and orders a small cherry with a top...Katelyn says make it two! Can't wait! Hurry, Hurry! These are the best cherry snow cones around!Katelyn has to eat the top before we get back in the truck! What does this treat for Ryan and Katelyn set us back? One whole dollar! What a bargain! If you're ever in Garland, you have to stop at the snowcone shack- it's even worth waiting in a line for. AND they have more flavors than cherry too.

50th Anniversary

Wes' parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today. I get to attempt to re-make their wedding cake- with a 50th anniversary touch of course! I love decorating cakes, but I don't like the stress that I put on myself to do the perfect job. Wes says that they always turn out beautifully- I can find every little flaw!

So, here's the picture Bec sent to me to try and get an idea of what the cake should look like. Wasn't Yetta Karen a beautiful bride? Reed looks as thrilled to take pictures as Wes usually is! Beautiful picture-BUT, kinda hard to tell exactly what the cake looked like.
Bec borrowed the bell and the bride and groom figure from the china hutch and I at least had a general idea to start with. I went smaller so we didn't end up eating cake for the next week. So, here's what I came up with...

Hope they love it!

Brick is Looking Good!

They are still working fast and furious on the house. 98% of the sheetrock is up, (they missed a closet!) and it has the first application of tape and mud. The brick looks great too! When they finish around the door, I'll post the results!

Look How Cute!

My friend Julie was here this week to help me decorate the front room, (or rather, she did it herself!). I think she did a great job... She is such a talented girl! I plan on inviting her to help decorate our new home as well. I just don't have the "put it all together knack" like she does. I'm glad I have talented friends! :0 )

Mystery Box...

We have a mystery! When Hunter went to get the mail today, there was a box addressed to Ryan and Katelyn. They were so excited and couldn't wait to open it! But we wonder who it's from...it only has a PO Box as a return address.

They were having a difficult time waiting for me to get the camera. What can it be????
Keepsake ornaments! Mickey and Wizard of Oz! They are thrilled! Whoever our mystery giver is, they know Ryan and Katelyn very well.Ryan loved the crank that turned the pictures on the ornament- he calls it live action!
Notice the hidden Mickey in the gears?

Katelyn couldn't have been happier! She said, "Look Mom, real jewels!" She even read the inscription on her own..."There's no place like home."
Whoever our mystery sender is, THANK YOU! It truly made their day!

Summer's Over for Ryan and Katelyn

We decided to end the summer early for Ryan and Katelyn. In order to keep them on track for first grade, I ordered a set of the readers that they were using in kindergarten.

Reading didn't come easy for Ryan, but I was happy to see that he'd retained everything he learned in school. He's almost done with his first reader- and since it isn't a school assignment, he will sit and read without a battle. PROGRESS!!!!

Katelyn was thrilled! She was disappointed at the end of the school year that she hadn't finished the series. She's convinced that if she finishes the readers, she'll be the smartest girl in the first grade. She's already zipped through two readers since Monday. She's going to be mad when we practice penmanship tonight...

Colorish Carwash..Or So They Say

My littles are the goofiest little kids ever. One of their favorite pastimes is going to the "colorish" carwash. They live for it! When I was little I remember wanting to go to Disneyland or Lagooon. I would have even preferred a day at Classic Skating and Water Slides. A day at the carwash never even crossed my mind! They must get it from Wes' side of the family! Ha Ha!

This is what we see before the moment that absolutely THRILLS Ryan and Katelyn. And here it is..."colorish"carwash. Go figure! The funny thing is if they realize that I went to the carwash without them, they get upset.
Here they are watching it rinse. Notice Katelyn trying to hold the colored suds on from the inside...what a silly girl! On the upside, a day at the carwash is definitely cheaper than a day at the water slide park, AND it's easier to keep track of the little munchkins!

11 Years...and Grapefruit

Last week, Wes and I celebrated our 11th anniversary. It came and went without a lot of notice, but we did have the opportunity to spend the entire weekend together just the two of us. Those who know us, realize that this is quite a treat for us. Since the twins came along, most of our attention is focused on them when we are not at work.

Wes took me to eat wherever I wanted- I decided to try the Beehive Grill- It's new to our area. Once again, I cannot choose well! The food was less than desirable and the waiter shorted our change. They didn't have shrimp on the menu either, who doesn't have shrimp??? Not impressive, we won't be going back.

The next night we went on a drive to no where imparticular. We ended up at Market Street Grill! Yum! The place was nearly deserted and we were seated immediately. As always, the food was wonderful. I had Halibut Oscar and Wes had plain Halibut. He was a bit disappointed that the vegetable was broccoflower...what kind of weirdo thought that up?

At work this week I mentioned to a few friends that we had celebrated our anniversary, elaborating on how blessed I am to have such a sweet husband who does so much for me. (I take that for granted a lot.) Somehow, we got on the topic of silly things that spouses do that really drive us crazy but are very insignificant. It is not a secret to Wes, but the thing that he does that drives me batty is turn his socks inside out when he takes them off. I told my friends that even though this makes extra work for me when doing the laundry, I try to keep it in check by remembering a story I read a few years back- "The Grapefruit Syndrome". Thought I'd share it with you today...

The Grapefruit Syndrome
By Lola B. Walters

As a young wife, I learned that marriage could be sweeter if I didn’t focus on my husband’s faults.
My husband and I had been married about two years when I read an article recommending that married couples discuss truthfully and candidly the habits or mannerisms they find annoying in each other. The theory was that if partners knew of such annoyances, they could correct them before resentful feelings developed.
It made sense to me. I talked with my husband about the idea. After some hesitation, he agreed to give it a try.
As I recall, we were to name five things we found annoying. I started off. After more than 50 years, I remember only my first complaint: grapefruit. I told him I didn’t like the way he ate grapefruit. Instead of cutting it open and eating it with a spoon, he peeled it and ate it a section at a time. Nobody else I knew ate grapefruit like that. Could I be expected to spend a lifetime, and even eternity, watching my husband eat grapefruit like that? Although I have forgotten them, I’m sure my other complaints were of similar importance.
Then it was his turn. It has been more than half a century, but I still carry a mental image of my husband’s thoughtful, puzzled expression. He looked at me and said, “I can’t think of anything I don’t like about you.”
Gasp. I quickly turned my back, not knowing how to explain my tears. I had found fault with him over such trivial things, while he hadn’t even noticed any of my peculiar and no doubt annoying habits.
I wish I could say this experience completely cured me of fault finding. It didn’t. But it did teach me early in my marriage that we need to keep in perspective, and usually ignore, the small differences in our spouse’s habits and personalities. Whenever I hear of married couples being incompatible, I always wonder if they are suffering from what I now call the grapefruit syndrome.

Final T-Ball Game of the Year

Well, yesterday was the last t-ball game of 2009. I have to say that I'm glad I won't be stressing to get off work in time for the 5:00 games anymore! Ryan and Katelyn are glad to be done too...it was SO hot the last few games! The good things about t-ball are that it has improved their coordination and it gives them time to interact with someone else instead of beating on each other! Here's Ryan on his final run to home plate for 2009. He's really getting to be a fast runner. This is Katelyn's final hit for 2009. She did much better this year. Maybe it was because she could actually SEE the ball!Daxen and Warren attended the game with us while Rikki moved. Daxen insisted on playing with the pink ball. Wouldn't his Dad be proud???? Ryan with his trophy...
Katelyn with hers. I think the trophy is the only reason she played!!!

More Bricks

I promised some of you close-up pics of the brick so here they are. Here you can see the color and the texture better. This is how much they got done yesterday. They were there again this morning working hard.
This is the tray ceiling in the master bedroom. They're going so quickly on the sheetrock, Wes thinks that they will be done today. Then tape and paint! It's getting closer!

Slowly But Surely

I took these pictures last night. Thought I'd share an update.

The brick was there as well as the correct color for the grout...Wild West. (Chocolate grout would have been really ugly with light tan and cream brick! Yuck! I'm glad the brick guy asked instead of just using that color!) The layers were there this morning to start.
The sheet rock people were there yesterday too. The house sounded like California Adventure on the first week of May near the Mission Tortilla Factory exhibit. The sheetrock is up on the ceiling in the basement and in the hall on the walls.

UNFORTUNATELY, the sheetrock in this room will need to be taken down. This was the one room that was not supposed to be finished yet. The vent to my down draft stove has not been run and it needs to go in the floor joists above this room. I'm sure everyone will be very happy to redo this!

Logan Loves His Job

I must start this post by mentioning that I asked HR for permission to use this photo- disclaimer and all up front. You know how it is these days- red tape, oh wait- signed and dated red tape!
(Ha Ha! A little joke for some friends from work who follow!)
This last weekend, I had the opportunity to meet some of Logan's family members. They must really like him a lot, because they sure give him a hard time about being a hard worker! I let them know that Logan is a very hard worker...I can always count on things in his area to be running PERFECT when he is out there. No kidding!

He is also a good example to his fellow co-workers. He follows GMPs- to the letter! (Check out the snazzy belt too!) AND he loves what he does- proof in the picture below! A friend lovingly titled this photo "Grunig Loving Cinnis" Still love the safety glasses Logan!

Freedom...

Today we celebrate.
We celebrate our freedom.
Freedom to say what we wish,
Freedom to work.
Freedom to learn,
Freedom to go where we choose.
Freedom to make the world a better place,
Freedom to have a family.
Freedom to worship how we choose,
Freedom to do choose what we do.

We live in the United States of America. I for one am guilty of taking this for granted. I foolishly have assumed from time to time that it has always been this way. Although I know deep in the recess of mind mind that this is not so.

I took the time to read the Declaration of Independence today. (If you haven't done this yet this year, there is a link at the bottom of this post you can use to get to it.) I remember reading this in school, but for some reason it did not resonate with me then as it does now.

I am in awe of those brave men and women who did what they had to do in order to give me the freedom that I enjoy. If you read it in full and realize the things that our forefathers had to endure prior to declaring this a sovereign nation, one can only imagine how brave these people must have been to stand up and have a voice. It had to be a very scary thing to do. I imagine that they worried for their lives and families as they each signed the declaration. Yet, they signed that declaration and continued to fight for what they believed to be the right thing.

I think it was best said by President Woodruff in the April 1898 General Conference-

“those men who laid the foundation of this American government and signed the Declaration of Independence were the best spirits the God of heaven could find on the face of the earth. They were choice spirits … [and they] were inspired of the Lord.”

Pictures in the Park

We made a trip to the park a few days ago to play and get some pictures of the littles. When I bought the new camera, one of my justifications to Wes was that I would not have to spend $200 for pictures of the kids twice a year at Kiddie Kandids. They do a great job mind you, but I'd rather have a really nice camera with me all the time to capture special moments.
I'm not a professional when it comes to taking pictures by any meaning of the word. I go for take a lot of pictures and hopefully I'll get something good. I have to say, I am getting a little better at this as time goes on.

So without further adieu, here are Ryan and Katelyn's six year old pictures...or just a few of them for your viewing pleasure. I plan to have prints made up of some of the better ones to share.KaTeLyN- 6

Go, Bears, Go!

Kate made it to cheerleading camp this summer. She was so excited to go! Ryan was sad because he wanted to go camping too. After I explained that it wasn't the kind of camping that he usually did, he was ok with staying home. My camera battery was dying, so the pictures I did get aren't very good. She's the one in the center with the pink sticker on her chin. What a goofy girl! When we left, I asked her if she had fun.

Kate: Yes, mother it was fun.
Me: Did you like learning to cheer?
Kate: Yes.
Me: Do you want to be a cheerleader when you get bigger?
Kate: No!
Me: Do you want to play ball?
Kate: No.
Me: Do you want to dance or do gymnastics?
Kate: No.
Me: Then what do you want to do when you get to high school?
Kate: Just boss people around.

Sounds like she may run for Student Body President some day!
